POWRi Flying In To Lincoln Speedway And Macon Speedway This Weekend

National Midgets To Be Joined By National Micros
The POWRi Lucas Oil National Midgets are set for the traditional doubleheader of racing, this coming Friday and Saturday, August 19/20. Fans will be flocking to Lincoln Speedway on Friday night and Macon Speedway on Saturday night, many of which will make it a full weekend of racing by also attending the Illinois State Fair events in Springfield on Saturday and Sunday.
Craziness will begin on Friday night at the friendly confines of Lincoln IL Speedway at the Logan County Fairgrounds. There, the POWRi Lucas Oil National Midgets, POWRi Speedway Motors Micros, UMP Pro Late Models, and UMP Modifieds will be pacing the 1/4-mile semi banked dirt oval.
The “Night Before The Illinois State Fair” midget race will see Zach Daum coming to town with a 490 point lead over Tanner Thorson in Midget competition. Spencer Bayston is currently third with his two victories, just 60 points behind Thorson. Justin Peck is fourth with Jake Neuman in fifth. Thorson will be looking for the sweep of Lincoln events this year, claiming the Midget week event in June after pitting to change a flat tire.
In POWRi Speedway Motors 600cc Micro competition, Nathan Benson will lead the field of competitors into town by 560 points. In second is Shelby Bosie with Jeremy Camp in third, Joe B. Miller fourth, and Alec Long fifth. At the June event, Blue Mound, IL driver, Jeremy Camp was victorious and will again be one of the favorites.
At Macon Speedway Saturday night, the POWRi Lucas Oil Midgets will be running in the “Rich Camfield Memorial”. Camfield, of nearby Decatur, was an ardent supporter of midget racing not only throughout the Midwest, but nationwide. Driving the #87 midget, Camfield was the 2001 Midwest Auto Racing Association (MARA) Champion and a frequent participant of the annual Chili Bowl Nationals. A stone’s throw away from Rich’s hometown, it was only fitting for Macon Speedway to be the track for the Annual Rich Camfield Memorial.
When it comes to Macon, there have been three different winners in the three national midget events this season. On April 23, Carl Juncton, MO driver, Andrew Felker, took the win followed by Tucker Klaasmeyer and Austin Brown. On May 21, it was Spencer Bayston in victory lane with Justin Peck and Colten Cottle taking podium spots. The most recent POWRi event at the Central Illinois facility was during SPEEDWEEK on June 11. On that night, Leemoore, CA driver Carson Macedo tasted victory, while Thorson and defending point champion, Darren Hagen scored second and third. Mother Nature claimed the July 2 event that was scheduled at the 1/5-mile.
In POWRi Speedway Motors Micro events at Macon this season, Frank Galusha of Lincoln, Nebraska took the checkered flag on April 23 with Matthew Howard and Nick Howard in tow. On May 21, the local, Jeremy Camp took the trophy back to Blue Mound, IL, while Benson and Levi Curry finished with podium spots. The most recent race was during SPEEDWEEK on June 11 where Nick Howard finished in victory lane with Camp and Evan Weyant second and third. Much like the national midgets, the micros also have not had a repeat winner.
Both tracks will feature a dabble of local flavor with the stock car classes as well. At Lincoln Speedway on Friday night, the very strong field of UMP Pro Late Models will be on hand racing for the top prize and important UMP points. Jake Little, of Springfield, is currently the top point collector at the track, despite not winning a feature. Roben Huffman, Brandon Eskew, Nick Bauman, and Matt Taylor complete the top five. Springfield’s Guy Taylor may be the one to watch, though, claiming the last couple checkered flags at the track.
The Pro Late Models will also run at Macon Speedway on Saturday night, in fact, it has been announced that some bonus money is on the line. The top three combined point collectors this Friday and Saturday night will receive bonuses of $300-$200-$100. It has also been announced that start money for the class has been raised to $100 to start this Friday and Saturday. At Macon Speedway, Matt Taylor has won four features and leads the standings by 42 over Roben Huffman. Jake Little, Guy Taylor, and Cody Maguire complete the top five.
Other divisions running this weekend are the UMP Modifieds at Lincoln Speedway and the Midwest Big Ten Street Stocks and UMP Hornets at Macon Speedway. Both nights will be action packed and a great sideshow for the big Illinois State Fair races that are on tap for the USAC Silver Crown Series, the ARCA Racing Series presented by Menards, and the UMP Sportsman. And many fans are excited for the UMP/MARS Super Late Model $5,000 to win race that will occur the following Thursday, August 25 at Lincoln Speedway. It is a makeup for the rainout in July.
Friday and Saturday details at Lincoln and Macon have pits opening at 3:00, grandstands at 5:00, hotlaps at 6:00, and racing action at 7:00. Each night will see the price of a grandstand ticket at just $15.
