POWRi Illinois Midget Week Underway And Heading To Central Illinois
Sunday Finale To Be Held At Lincoln IL Speedway
The 2016 edition of the highly popular Illinois Midget SPEEDWEEK, sanctioned by POWRi, is officially underway, after completing the Belle-Clair Speedway event last night. In what can be a grueling week for drivers and teams, fans love seeing some of the best open wheelers in the country converge in Illinois. Everything will wrap up on Sunday evening, June 12, at the Lincoln Speedway finale, in Lincoln, IL.
In opening night action at Belle-Clair Speedway, in Belleville, IL, 32 POWRi Lucas Oil National Midgets, 55 POWRi Speedway Motors Micros, and 20 POWRi/Illini D-II Midgets were on track for a great kickoff to the week. In 2015, the car count ballooned to huge numbers by the weekend, having in upwards of 55 Midgets and 65 Micros at the Macon Speedway event Saturday. Again this year, the car count is expected to grow as the weekend nears.
The Sunday SPEEDWEEK finale at Lincoln Speedway will see racing in all three POWRi divisions in addition to racing action in the UMP Midwest Technical Institute Modified division. Ray Bollinger of Kewanee, IL has had a great start at Lincoln, winning the first three Modified features before last year’s champion, Brian Lynn claimed the victory at the May 20 event. NASCAR’s Kenny Wallace will also be on hand trying to take the trophy back from Brian Lynn who made a late race pass the last time the two met up.
Pit gates on Sunday, June 12 at Lincoln Speedway will open at 2:30, grandstands at 4:00, Modified pill draw will end at 4:50, hotlaps will begin at 5:00, Modified group qualifying will begin at 5:45, and racing will take the green at 6:00.
